What homeowners actually paid

We checked this calculator against 75 bathroom remodel quotes and invoices that homeowners shared publicly from 2020 to 2026, in 13 states. Older prices were adjusted to 2026 with official construction cost indexes. Their median was $33,500 for a mix of sizes and finish levels, and 80% of them fell between our Low and High estimates for the same size, finish and state.

Published cost guides we checked put a similar job at about $14,800 (median of 6 guides from 2025-2026), 46% below our typical price. Guides are estimates too, often older or for a smaller scope of work; we follow the quotes homeowners actually shared, and 80% of them fell within our range.

What affects the cost

Common questions

Is $10,000 enough to remodel a bathroom?

For a full remodel by a contractor, usually not. A small 5x8 ft bathroom with budget finishes typically costs $23,870 (most quotes $12,220 to $44,880). $10,000 can cover a cosmetic refresh, such as a new vanity, toilet, fixtures and paint, or a project where you do part of the work yourself.

What should a bathroom remodel quote include?

An itemized quote should list demolition and disposal, fixtures (or allowances for them), tile and the waterproofing system, plumbing, electrical, drywall and paint, the permit, and a payment schedule. If a line such as waterproofing is missing, ask about it before you sign.

How much should I pay upfront?

Pay in stages tied to finished work, not most of the price at the start. Some states limit deposits: in California, a home improvement down payment cannot be more than $1,000 or 10% of the contract price, whichever is less (California Contractors State License Board).

Why do bathroom remodel quotes vary so much?

Quotes differ in scope (what is included), finishes, how busy the contractor is and how much they mark up subcontractors. For the same 5x8 ft bathroom, a high quote ($50,620) can be more than three times a low one ($13,910). Comparing itemized quotes is the best way to see why.

How long does a bathroom remodel take?

Our estimate for a 5x8 ft bathroom assumes about 116 hours of trade labor (tile, plumbing, electrical and carpentry). With inspections and drying time, most full remodels take two to four weeks once materials arrive.

Do I need a permit?

Usually yes when plumbing or electrical work is part of the job. Our estimate includes a typical permit fee of $100 to $600. Your contractor usually pulls the permit.

How much of the cost is labor?

For a typical 5x8 ft remodel, labor is about 42% of the price, fixtures and materials about 19%, and the rest is contractor overhead, profit, demolition and the permit.

How we calculated this

Fixture, tile and material prices from national retailers and manufacturers (checked October 2026), installer hours for each trade times local wages from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025), subcontractor and contractor margins from industry financial data, and regional price levels from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. We check the result against verified homeowner quotes. Verified quotes ran about 28% above our line-item model, so the estimate includes a +28% market adjustment (why we adjust).
