How to calculate square footage

Rectangle or square: length × width. A 12 ft × 14 ft room is 168 sq ft.

Feet and inches: divide the inches by 12 first. 12 ft 6 in is 12.5 ft, so a 12 ft 6 in × 10 ft room is 125 sq ft. If you measured only in inches, multiply the two sides and divide by 144: 60 in × 30 in = 1,800 sq in = 12.5 sq ft.

Triangle: base × height ÷ 2. Circle: 3.1416 × (diameter ÷ 2)². A circle 10 ft across is 78.54 sq ft.

L-shaped and irregular rooms: split the floor into rectangles, find each area and add them up. A 20 × 10 ft area plus a 10 × 8 ft area is 280 sq ft. Use "Add another area" above for each part.

How do I find the square footage of my house?

Measure each floor or each room and add the areas. For an L-shaped floor, split it into rectangles. Appraisers for mortgages sold to Fannie Mae must follow the ANSI Z765-2021 standard, which reports above-grade and below-grade square footage separately (Home Innovation Research Labs), so a basement is listed apart from the main living area.

How much flooring do I need?

Find the floor's square footage, then add 10% for cuts and mistakes, or 15 to 20% for diagonal and herringbone patterns. Flooring is sold by the box, so divide by the square feet per box and round up. For a 12 × 14 ft room with 10% extra, buy 184.8 sq ft.

How do I convert square feet to square meters?

Multiply square feet by 0.0929, or divide by 10.764. For example, 168 sq ft is 15.61 m².
