What homeowners actually paid
We checked this calculator against 60 fence installation quotes and invoices that homeowners shared publicly from 2021 to 2026, in 18 states. Older prices were adjusted to 2026 with official construction cost indexes. Their median was $9,700 for fences of about 180 ft, mostly wood and vinyl, and 77% of them fell between our Low and High estimates for the same length, material and state.
Published cost guides we checked put a similar job at about $6,000 (median of 3 guides from 2026), 10% below our typical price. Guides are estimates too, often older or for a smaller scope of work; we follow the quotes homeowners actually shared, and 77% of them fell within our range.
What affects the cost
- Length: fences are priced by the foot, so the fence line matters most.
- Material and height: chain link is the cheapest option here and vinyl privacy fencing the most expensive.
- Gates: each extra gate typically adds about $770.
- Ground: slopes, rocky soil and tree roots make post holes slower to dig.
- Your state: labor is about 22% of the typical price.

Yes. Call 811 or file a request online a few days before anyone digs post holes. Utility companies then mark buried lines for free.
How we calculated this
Fencing, post, concrete and gate prices from manufacturers and national retailers (checked October 2026), installation hours per foot from installer sources times local fence erector wages from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025), contractor margins from industry financial data, and regional price levels from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. We check the result against verified homeowner quotes. Full methodology · Sources.
